Here's who I am & what I do
Hi! I'm Emma Carroll Hudson — PhD student at American University, communications specialist, fan studies scholar, and reclaimer of "personality hire" as a positive job descriptor.
I am published in M/C Journal, International Journal of Disney Studies, and Routledge's Advances in Popular Culture Studies, with forthcoming anthology work. My research bridges fan cultures, media studies and public relations to showcase the real motivations behind fan activity that go beyond the colloquial stereotypes. I specialize in music fandoms and TV & film fandoms.
My academic background is a combination of humanities and communications. I earned my MS in public relations from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University in 2023. In 2021, I graduated from the University of Tennessee with a BA in English and a minor in Retail Consumer Science. While at UTK, I was EIC of Honey Magazine (now Ablaze), president of the creative writing club, and president of Sigma Tau Delta (English National Honor Society).
